No Limit Audio Reference One

The Reference One is an impressive product, with an overall height of more than 1.20m. The finish shown in the photographs is called “White Chalk”, while buyers can also opt for a more luxurious, classic appearance, called “Shiny Rosewood”.
The system consists of a head module that handles the high and mid/low frequencies, complemented by a separate bass cabinet housing a woofer and passive radiator for the very low frequencies. The two sections are connected by a pair of external cables.
High frequencies are reproduced by a 20mm Accuton ceramic tweeter, while the mids and lows are handled by a 180mm mid/woofer with a fiberglass cone. The driver is bass-reflex loaded through a rectangular cross-section port located on the rear panel. The rear panel also houses a second, 19mm dome tweeter, which radiates toward the rear and, as with the “the fourth dimension”, is intended to enhance the stereo image.

The Reference One is a large floorstanding loudspeaker with a modular cabinet. The head module reproduces frequencies from 58Hz upward, while the woofer cabinet is a system that covers a single octave, from 32Hz.

The lowest part of the audio spectrum is reproduced by a 220mm woofer loaded by a passive radiator. This driver covers a single octave, from 32 to 60Hz, extending the response of the head module, which starts at 58Hz and reaches, according to the published specifications, up to 30kHz.
The tweeter is loaded by a waveguide specifically designed to align the acoustic centers of the tweeter and mid/woofer. According to No Limit, the waveguide also increases sensitivity in the upper midrange and allows the use of gentle 6dB/octave crossover slopes, resulting in crossover networks with just a single capacitor in the signal path. Based on the published information, considerable attention has been paid to the quality of the crossover components, with no resistors in the signal path. Internal wiring is carried out using high-quality, large-gauge cable designed to minimize the skin effect.

The tweeter is made by Accuton and features a 20mm ceramic diaphragm.

Mid/low frequencies are reproduced by a 180mm mid/woofer with a fiberglass cone.

Both cabinets are constructed from solid oak, with the baffles covered in a soft material that, in addition to providing damping, creates a visually striking two-tone finish. No Limit states that each cabinet incorporates numerous internal cross-braces as well as different damping materials, providing effective suppression of cabinet resonances.

This tweeter is mounted on the rear panel and, according to the manufacturer, improves the stereo image. The head module’s bass-reflex port can be seen directly below it.

The two sections of the loudspeaker—the head module and the bass cabinet—are not mechanically coupled in a permanent sense. The head module rests on top of the woofer cabinet at three Stradivaris support points, handcrafted by No Limit and consisting of a metal component with pure carbon used as the damping material. The loudspeaker is coupled to the floor via adjustable spikes.

The head module and woofer cabinet have no mechanical coupling other than the three Stradivaris support points.
